The amount of coins generated is 60% of the item's value (not the Grand Exchange price), and 50% more than Low Level Alchemy would yield., Similar to selling certain items in NPC shops at fixed prices, it helps standardize values of items so they can't fluctuate as widely. EDIT: To be clear, I'm NOT saying that I think OSRS has a good and stable economy. I think we clearly need some more gold sinks. I do not think that high alchemy is the source of the problem though.
